Instead of self-doubt, worry, and stress, why not come up with positive answers to this one question...
What else is possible?
In The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney, 12 year old Amira and her father, Dando, play a game focused on this one question. Believe me, this Sudanese family have lots to worry about...a civil war and girls don't have the privilege of an education (to name a few)...but this game keeps Amira hopeful for what her future may hold. When militia attackers invade her village, destroying her home and ripping her life apart, Amira, and what's left of her family, journey to a refugee camp. Suddenly, with the gift of a pencil and a notepad (small things most of us take for granted), Amira finds her voice and new hope.
The Red Pencil is a reminder to all of us that there are unspeakable atrocities happening in our world, and that we are extremely fortunate. What else is possible? helps me focus on outcomes in life that are shiny (using Amira's word), keep things positive...and never give up.
