What NOT to Say to a Pregnant Woman

2009 - Around thirty-something weeks of pregnancy

For the record, I think there's nothing more beautiful than a pregnant woman. I think babies are a miracle from God, and a woman carrying one is just simply gorgeous. Yes...even with a waddle and swollen ankles!

I admit that one might not feel quite so beautiful during pregnancy especially during those last few weeks when you can't find a comfortable resting or sleeping position.  I was talking to a friend today about her second pregnancy. She was telling me how "huge" she felt his time around, and even though she was laughing about it and being a good sport, I could tell that this was bothering her a little bit.

She also mentioned some of the comments people were saying to her.  And while some of the remarks were positive, some were not. I don't think people really mean to be offensive, but perhaps they need to be a little more sensitive and tactful.

Acceptable comments include:

You're beautiful.

You look great.

You have that pregnancy glow.

When are you due?

Do you know what you're having?

What NOT to say:

You're huge!

You look like you're about to pop!

You sure you're not carrying twins?

I don't like the baby's name.

And this is a big one. Never. Never ask a woman if she's pregnant. She may be.  But then again, she may have just had a baby, or worse, never lost the baby bump from a previous pregnancy...a while ago.

What about you? What are some comments people have said to you, or that you've heard, that are not appropriate to say to a pregnant woman?
