Why I Love Rooting for the Underdog

One of the things I love about teaching is seeing growth and progress.  I guess that's why I love rooting for the underdog...

When you're at the top, it's a tough place to be because someone is always looking to take your place. You have to be really good to be the best and stay in position number one. Now if you're the underdog, that's a different story. You have no place to go, but up. And if you're the underdog, I'm more likely to root for you.

The Hubs has been coaching Buddy Roller's basketball team since November. The season is almost over. There's only one game to go. We have won only one game so far. Yup. One game. But, most of the players have never played basketball before. We are constantly the underdogs, and our players are consistently the smallest and shortest players when compared to the other teams.

During today's game, something amazing happened. One of our players scored, not one, but two baskets. Two! You're thinking that's not a big deal right? Except that it is. He has never scored a basket this whole season. In fact, I think he's been afraid to shoot a shot. When given the ball, he always passes it to another player. Today, he took the shot. And twice, he made it!!! That's. Big. And you know what? He was so elated, he cried tears of joy. He had me and The Hubs tearing up too. Even his mom. After the game, we celebrated him which resulted in even more tears. That's the thing about our team and our community. We know how to celebrate the little victories.

Number 52, you did a great job today. You believed in yourself, you took a chance, and you did it. Good for you. We didn't win the game, but it's not always about the final score. It's about growth and progress, and that's why I'll always root for the underdog.
