I'm Here to Walk You Home

This week, a friend of mine lost her Dad.  And while it was a very sad occasion, his life had a sweet ending...

We all know death is inevitable, but still, when it happens it can be devastating. Whether it's a sudden death or one you know is soon, it still is hard to bear.

In this case, my friend knew her Dad's life would be ending soon. They had some time, though little.  The hospital couldn't do much more, and so they released him.  Calls were made, time taken from work and then all three sisters would convene in the same house to say their goodbyes. Day after day, night after night, they held vigil. Recounting stories, sharing memories, gifting forgiveness for all of life's wrongs and regrets, laughing...and crying.

All three sisters were there to help walk their Dad home. When my friend first told me about her and her sisters' plan to say goodbye, I thought of it as such a gift. The blessing of time, one last chance to say all the things you want.

Life is uncertain and very unpredictable, but how sweet it was for this family to spend their Dad's last days this way. Together.
